An Emotional Year – A 2017 Review

How can it be 2018 already? 2017 had sneaked by so quickly I need to figure out where it went! It felt like we’d somehow pressed the fast forward button after the birth of our child and we got stuck in the fast forward  mode! 2017 was definitely a year filled with many different emotions and many firsts. In this post, I would like to focus on a few highlights, and my goals for 2018.

2017 Emotional Year In Review

Published 2 colouring travel journals

Wander In Colour Wander In Colour: With Cats
In January and March, I published my Wander in Colour, and Wander in Colour: With Cats coloring travel journals. They were a continuation of the coloring travel journal series called Wander In Colour. I am super proud of them, because within a few months, I was able to put together two journals despite of the nausea I felt from my pregnancy. It was a lot of work, but I pulled through!

Being pregnant for the first half of the year

I admit that my pregnancy wasn’t bad. Compare to other people, I am sure mine was a breeze. But I don’t want to sugarcoat it, it wasn’t totally pleasant. I was nauseous for the majority of my pregnancy and I couldn’t eat a lot, so Anthony was always concerned that I wasn’t eating enough. Anyway, one of the things we really looked forward to was taking the baby bump photo every week. It was really cool to see my transformation each week. Here’re two sample bumpies!

Giving birth and living with Beanie

On Jun 2nd, 2017, I gave birth to our son. I wrote a short piece about my birthing experience here. I definitely caught a little of the postpartum blues. It felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster all the time, and every little thing would make me tear up. One moment, I would be super elated, and the next I would get extremely frustrated/emotional. One of the things I hated (and still do) the most was breastfeeding/pumping. My ducts would get clogged and my right nipple would close up all the time. When this happened, I would have to spend 2-3+ hours trying to fix the problem. I would always get super frustrated and upset and would end up crying all the time. All I can say is that Anthony is the greatest husband and dad. He was always there for me. He took care of many many things, and he would help out to let me rest. I’m blessed to have a husband like that!

Living with Beanie was a big learning curve. It took both of us some time to figure out how to take care of him, what he wants, getting a hang of things, and we’re still trying to do that daily! It’s both frustrating and rewarding at times. One of the things I regretted not doing is to keep a journal on his development during the past 7 months. He’s 7 months now, and he’s changed and grown so much! The only thing we tried to do consistently is take photos of him. But I feel like I need to do more, because I know I will forget, and I want to remember. I really want to start documenting his milestones.

7 months old as of Jan 2nd!

Had my first physical book sale!

I had the opportunity to have my first book sale on Sept 30th and Oct 1st during the Crafteria event held by Across U-hub. I didn’t sell a lot of books, but it was a wonderful opportunity for me to showcase my colouring travel journals with the world. As I mentioned in my post, up til that point, I’d only sold my books online (on Amazon). So it was nice to be able to show people what my books are about, and how to use them. It was a great learning experience!

The re-emergence of my children book ideas

I’ve had the idea of creating children activity books since the end of 2015. But whenever it comes, due to my lack of illustration skills, I would end up putting it aside. This time, after I went on maternity leave, the idea of creating children activity book re-emerged again. I think it’s because I want to create it so I can do it with my son. I worked a little bit on it, and I got a chance to bounce my idea off my mentor. But because I need time to work on the illustrations, I’ve put a temporary hold on the project AGAIN. This year, I really want to work on this, so I can get the books going.

Ricky and RIley's Adventure

Got kicked in the rear (x2)

On December 23rd, I came across this post called “How to be a Relentless Badass” by The Skinny Confidential, which led me to dig a little deeper about Tim Grover’s book, Relentless. That’s when I found this book summary which inspired me a lot. At the same time, I was introduced to Jim Rohn, and ended up watching his “How to Have Your Best Year Ever” video, which woke me up. I’d always enjoyed reading motivational articles or watching motivational videos, and I’d been trying to “get back onto the wagon” since July. But I found it very difficult to keep at it. Since listening to Tim Grover and Jim Rohn, I now take on full responsibility and have become very productive. I am fortunate to get a chance to listen to these two men. I’ll do a post on each of these men’s lessons within the next few weeks.

Published my first coloring inspirational journal

I had been working on a coloring inspirational journal since September. I thought I would be able to get it done by October. But excuses got a hold of me, so I didn’t get to work on it consistently. This got pushed back into November, and then well into December. After the two butt kicks mentioned previously, I buckled down and stepped up my game. On Jan 1st, 2018, I published my very first, coloring inspiritaional journal called Inspired and Colorful Life: Doors of Opportunity! I’m super excited that I got to start this year with a bang!!

2017 was a great year! It was challenging and there were a lot of ups and downs. I had to get through a lot of hurdles in order to get things done. But I am glad that I got a chance to shift my mindset. I will work my hardest to keep it up! So now, let’s go onto the…

2018 GOALS

It’s already Jan 3rd! So I would like to list the things I would like to work on in 2018.
